Our partner in teaching and research duties at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Professor Juan Antonio Martinez López, successfully defended the Thursday February 24, 2011 in the faculty of Biology at the University of Murcia. The title of his doctoral thesis was " Optimization of modified atmosphere packaging of Iceberg lettuce" and was directed by Dr. Artes Calero. He received the Outstanding rating cum laude. Our colleague, a member since its inception to our team and we wish her our heartfelt congratulations. We continue to work in our research (especially melons) and so far in the UPCT and capable of other career goals in the future.

The melon fruit exported in 2010 from the Region of Murcia have proved more profitable than 25% in value last year 2009 (EUR 105 million), with a production volume of 168,801 t. We do not know if this output includes the melon is already occurring in Senegal, Brazil, Costa Rica, etc. and is marketed by different companies from Murcia.

On February 14 we have begun planting seeds in a well known company in the area to start planting in early April. Besides a careful selection of seed, planting technique is important. In the photo the fellow Pablo Crespo collaboration with a refined style of planting, avoiding putting the seeds on the trays. Collaborate in our 2011 campaign for the first time Juan Esteva Pascual, Department of Plant Production. We expect him to start experiments with propagating and plant breeding. To be considered eligible for predoctoral fellow of the Fundación Carolina must meet the following requirements:
- A citizen of one of the countries of the South American Community of Nations.
- Hold a degree or engineer.
- Being a teacher of career or plant, or administrative personnel of a Latin American university, and presented or sponsored by it, certified institutional commitment to return upon completion of doctoral studies.
- Achieve the curricular requirements of excellence and expertise.
- Meet the legal or contractual requirements established by the home university and by the Fundación Carolina.
- Having a letter of acceptance to the Ph.D. or Masters program officer is associated with a Ph.D. from a English university. In this case, it is imperative that the letter of acceptance to the Master Course List the title of doctoral acccess.
- Do not be a resident in Spain.
