Chilean scientists working on developing the first vaccine against alcoholism, based on a genetic mutation present in 20% of the Asian population that naturally suffer the consequences so severe that it inhibits alcohol addiction, said the chief doctor of the project. These populations lack a gene that produces the enzyme "aldehyde dehydrogenase", which breaks down alcohol in the body. Without this enzyme, drinking is a reaction so strong that people do not taste the alcohol, explained the doctor at the University of Chile
"The therapy has already been tested in rats genetically alcoholic, which is able to reduce addiction by more than 50% and one or two years will begin human trials," said Asensio.
